“Simple things are always the most difficult.” ~ Carl Jung
The running group that I belong to encourages a couple of short runs twice during the week, to complement the weekend long run. We usually meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the evening, and we used to have a group of approximately 15 people show up consistently. We even have a WhatsApp chat where we check in and let others know if we will attend. We also post after race photos to promote the habit of running.
A few months ago, one of the core members, and the one who had been there the longest, had to be away because of a family situation. Ever since, the number of people who are showing up to run mid-week has plummeted. The other day, only 3 people showed up! Granted, we are in the middle of summer in South Florida, and people often skip running all together.
But I started thinking that even if the main leader is not able to continue, that should not be the reason why the group disbands. So, I am making an effort to attend, communicate with others and post on the chat, to let them and myself know that we are still pushing through. Even if I am not able to go, I remind others to take photos, post and keep the spirit alive.
It’s important to maintain a sense of normalcy in uncertain times. I believe humans need structure and companionship to get through ‘tough” times. This is my grain of sand for the group. People may be stressed out from work, family responsibilities, or even the news, so a short run on a random Tuesday may be what is needed to get us through the day.
