“Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going” ~ Jim Rohn
On a whim I started watching the new series “Chespirito” on HBO Max. For those of you not familiar with it, it’s about the life of Roberto Gomez Bolaños (his nickname was Chespirito), the creator of a Mexican TV show from 1970-1995. I watched and enjoyed the original show as a kid, mostly for its innocent and clever humor. The 2025 series was produced by Gomez Bolaños’ son and is based on his dad’s biography.
What has fascinated me about the show is looking into the Gomez Bolanos’ mind as a writer (I may write about his family life in another post). He started writing advertising campaigns for radio, then started writing for comedians on radio shows, and then with the advent of tv, he went on to write for this new medium. He eventually started acting himself and starred in several popular shows.
Some of the famous characters he created were based on his own childhood experiences (El Chavo del Ocho), while others were parodies of existing superheroes (El Chapulin Colorado). He used to travel with his actors throughout Latin America, all of which helped build his popularity in the continent. To this day, his shows are still watched, and his comedic legacy has endured.
So why am I writing about him? First, because it amazes me to think that something tangible like a TV show can originate from someone’s mind via written words. Second, I watched an interview where someone asked him how he got inspiration to write every day. He replied that there were many days where he didn’t feel like writing. But he would write every single day anyway to create the habit. And inspiration would then appear.
I have not written in a while, for many different reasons (excuses). But after watching this series and listening to his practice, I decided to retake my humble blog. I have no idea what to write about. Topics may present themselves. Or they may not. My intent now is to create the writing habit.
